We are 227 reviews away from a total of 17,000. If we average about 5/day, we could hit 17000 by Thanksgiving (apologies to all my friends who do not live in the US). Anyone want to help me? I think if we worked together we could do it. ]]>

As I stated back in May, I thought it would be nice to alternate between larger, more general cookbooks (like The Essential New York Times) and smaller, more focused, perhaps ethnic cookbooks.

Which cuisines and which specific cookbooks are folks interested in cooking from come September?]]>

Hi, everybody. I'm SundayCooking, a new member who's curious to find out whether this is still an active group. I just started entering cookbooks, then realized that the most recent article on the site was from May, 2012.

Would anyone be interested in doing a Homesick Texan or dumpling-book-of-your choice challenge for November? ]]>
New Challenge - May 2013 http://cookbooker.com/test-dir/forum/discussion/108/new-challenge-may-2013 Sat, 04 May 2013 14:43:55 -0400 BethNH 108@/test-dir/forum/discussions
After reading the forums and giving some thought to recent challenges, I was thinking it might be good to have the next challenge be a more general one. The most recent challenges have been on specific cuisines. Perhaps it might be nice to use a more wide ranging cookbook like The Essential New York Times Cookbook by Amanda Hesser. This book is owned by 43 Cookbooker members and should be widely available online.

After this, the next challenge could return to a specific cuisine (perhaps an Asian one). It might be nice to toggle back and forth between specific cuisines and general cookbooks.

Please share your thoughts, including how long you think the challenge should last or anything else you'd like to see, so we can organize the next challenge as quickly as possible.]]>

This is the book which taught me how to overcome my fear of pastry and produce a delightfully tender and flaky crust, not to mention some excellent pies. Rose is a meticulous baker - the book contains exacting instructions, and each recipe has weights as well as volumes. This book is a master class in pies and pastries, and I am looking forward to expanding my horizons with this challenge.

It's been out for over a decade, so should be easy to find in libraries, used and of course since it's such a classic, it's still in print and available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and any other good bookstore (such as one of the stores in our bookstores list here: http://www.cookbooker.com/bookstores.php).]]>

Currently, our challenge is Vij's: Elegant & Inspired Indian Cuisine. I'm a big fan of the restaurant, the book and of the publisher and I'm hoping we can get some reviews in for this excellent book.

Our next challenge will be in late October or early November and is slated to be a new cookbook "High Flavor, Low Labor" by J.M. Hirsch.

After that, we're open for suggestions. Ideally books which lots of our members own. In a previous thread some members suggested Ina Garten, and I'd be delighted to do a Garten cookbook or an all round Gartenfest for the holiday season. Then we do need to tackle a vegetarian cookbook. One suggestion was Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything Vegetarian, though given his output and popularity, I think we could probably hold a Bittmanfest too! ]]>

As it says in the details, we're looking for recipes cooked on the grill and related outdoors cooking methods - so whether you are using a dutch oven on briquettes or the coals of a fire, cooking on the BBQ or roasting a pig on a spit, if you tag your recipe review with 'grilling' you'll be in the challenge.

We're offering a choice from three summer cookbooks as prizes, so check out the details at www.cookbooker.com/challenge and get cooking! You have until August 21st.]]>

Newest Challenge: The Moosewood Cookbook http://cookbooker.com/test-dir/forum/discussion/34/newest-challenge-the-moosewood-cookbook Sun, 13 Feb 2011 22:04:03 -0500 andrew 34@/test-dir/forum/discussions Moosewood Cookbook Challenge. It's going to last for five weeks, and I'm hopeful we'll see a treasure-trove of new reviews from members old and new. Because we have six different editions of the cookbook on the site, we'll be accepting reviews from any of the books, including The New Moosewood Cookbook.

Long-time members will notice a few changes: first, we're starting the clock from today, so the challenge statistics will only show reviews contributed from today onwards; older reviews will not count towards prize eligibility. Second, we're going to try out a weighted random draw for prizes; each review gets you one ballot towards a prize. We'll also limit winners to two prizes per calendar year. There will be three prizes; winners can choose another one of Molly Katzen's more recent cookbooks.

Also, we'll recognize the top reviewers with our kudos, whether they win an award or not.

This thread is here for challenge-related chatter. Let me know if there are any bugs, and also how you're doing with the book. I'm going to dig into it a bit further, as although my wife and I have a good half-dozen or so favorites from Moosewood, there are lots of recipes we've not yet tackled. ]]>

If you're interested, here are the conditions: you must intend to do some cooking from this book for the challenge (we want your reviews!), and you must live in Canada or the US (sorry international folk, but I'm sending this out on my own dime, and overseas shipping is expensive).

To be eligible, just reply to this thread with something creative - how about your favorite Halloween treat? I'll randomly pick someone on Monday or Tuesday depending on how many people reply to this. [Note: this was initially Sunday but since most people replying so far either are getting the book or not participating, I'm giving it a little longer]]]>
