Today I was in Boston, and because of cookbooker and reading all of your reviews, I recognized the Flour bakery, and ate there. Oh boy was it good. And from your reviews, I knew that the desserts would likely be the best part. I admit I blew my diet and we tried four different desserts. It was very fun, and makes me now want to buy the cookbook.
Along a similar line, my husband ate at Dinosaur BBQ, and later bought the book (we love the book).

So - if you've reviewed from Flour - then thanks so much - and I'd love to hear your stories/experiences.]]>

As usual, we have six weeks and cookbook prizes to offer. I am going to cheat and buy preserved lemons at a local store... but I do have a small jar of Ras El Hanout I have been saving for a special occasion!

Here's the details for anyone interested: American Weigh SC-2KG Digital Pocket Scale.

Oh and as an amusing aside, I was perusing the listings of these small scales, often known as jewelery scales (you can weigh your peppercorns in troy ounces!), and Amazon was suggesting some other purchases that seemed a little odd, such as large quantities of small plastic bags, when I realized that a major use of these scales must be in weighing illicit substances!]]>

Just a quick note to let you know the forums are updated. They look very similar, but have some new features, including the ability to quote other members in your replies, to flag spammers and the very important ability to add smiley faces! :)

Plus it has a great mobile version for iPhones and the like!

Don't forget you can also set up email notifications for the forums by clicking on 'My Settings' in the button bar above and then clicking 'preferences' on the left menu. ]]>

This is the book which taught me how to overcome my fear of pastry and produce a delightfully tender and flaky crust, not to mention some excellent pies. Rose is a meticulous baker - the book contains exacting instructions, and each recipe has weights as well as volumes. This book is a master class in pies and pastries, and I am looking forward to expanding my horizons with this challenge.

It's been out for over a decade, so should be easy to find in libraries, used and of course since it's such a classic, it's still in print and available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and any other good bookstore (such as one of the stores in our bookstores list here: http://www.cookbooker.com/bookstores.php).]]>

I got three new cookbooks: The Homesick Texan, The Casserole Queens Cookbook and Essential Pepin. Pepin lives in the same town as my inlaws and my mil was kind enough to get me a signed copy of the book.

I also received a new pepper mill and a gorgeous blue 3 qt. Lodge Dutch Oven.

My stocking was filled with yummy jams, mustards, peppercorns and chocolates.

It was a great foodie holiday for me.]]>

Weights vs Volume in Cookbooks http://cookbooker.com/test-dir/forum/discussion/62/weights-vs-volume-in-cookbooks Wed, 07 Dec 2011 22:30:45 -0500 andrew 62@/test-dir/forum/discussions Great article in the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail about how useful a scale is in the kitchen. Especially interesting to us cookbookers is this part on page 2 (and it applies to American cookbooks too):

"Kitchen scales are the dirty secret of Canadian recipe publishing. Everybody in the business knows that weight measures are superior. And yet not a single major Canadian food publication (The Globe and Mail as well) uses them outside of meat, poultry and some vegetables – ingredients that are sold by weight. “Volume measurement is just how Canadian cooks cook,” Ms. Shneer said. Translation: They don’t think we’re ready for it."

I was pleased to find both imperial and metric measurements in Heidi Swanson's Super Natural Every Day, published earlier this year, and the current challenge author, Rose Levy Beranbaum, has always included precise weights with her recipes, but I wouldn't be surprised if they both had to browbeat their publishers into accepting this!]]>
