I think this may be a matter of taste but I did not like this ice cream at all. For me, I think the contrast of the basil flavor and sweet cream did not work. I had the strongest negative reaction to it at the dinner party where I served it, so I think this is a concoction you either love or hate.

I thought this ice cream was amazing and worth the price of the book. It is a really nice ice cream that was something extra special when served as Lebovitz suggests -- atop strawberries macerated in a lemon-sugar syrup, Just lovely -- a burst of sweet summery flavors. And it looks beautiful garnished with a basil leaf or two. Sure to impress dinner guests and it's all do-ahead.

Next time I'd like to try this ice cream with roasted strawberries drizzled with an aged balsamic vinegar.
