Queezle Sister
This picture shows Queezle, a quail who lived with us for a year. She because our friend (not dinner), but eventually a wild male courted her through the window, and so she returned to the wild.

Thanks for the explanation - I've avoided redundancy with the title, and that appears to be the right choice. I think I'm getting the hang of it.

Beth and Andrew, you crack me up! I've noticed that recipes without tags automatically get the tags "tags" and "separated by commas", as these are in the default in your tags field. But speaking of tags, I'm a bit at …

I have used the "links" section to link similar recipes - I hope that is OK. Recently Southercooker reviewed a recipe similar to one we prepared previously, so I wrote a note and added links to the other review (for both reviews). H…

What a great discussion about reading cookbooks. I, too, love to read them, and the most likely place to find a "lost" cookbook is under my bed!

I like those lodge cast iron pans - I have a frying pan and dutch oven by lodge, and they are well seasoned and clean up nicely.

It could be timed to correspond to thanksgiving - Canadian and US. Probably most cookbookers are making pie - but getting them to register it for the challenge almost seems like a challenge in itself!

Hi, and thanks for the comments. Actually it is a non-aluminum one. We've had the same experience (bad after-taste) with one batch of biscuits where my husband admitted to not measuring, and probably adding too much. I've only noticed …

I'll be interested to see the rules for this contest - we've been working our dutch oven, and dutch oven cooking requires briquettes and the great outdoors. But its not grilling. Will it count? Looking forward to it!

Tips and Tricks of the Trade
These are great tips! RedJanet - I've done the boiling water three times since reading your tip - it really works. I, too, have a kitchen scale, but I don't use it enough. I'm going to write Andrew's weight conversions on a ca…

I have been plagued by a stove that cooks too hot, and I'll share with you my solution. I purchased a "simmer mat" for my stove. Its a heavy cast iron disc that sits on the burner, between the flame and the pan. I get my frying pan…

I'll be out of town for all week next week. Might be able to squeeze in a few dutch oven recipes, but more likely you won't hear from me. Sorry - and I'll try to make up for it after the 4th. Veganomicon is a great book - I'm …

Welcome, Jayme. Andrew carries out the challenges - every couple months. But in the meantime, I started to use this forum tracking my own progress. I've been trying to use all my cookbooks, enough at least to write an informed book review. …

My borrowed Veganomicon is back, and I've started. Thanks Leeka and SelahWrites - this will be fun. I wonder if its possible to write to all the owners of Veganomicon and invite them to join us?

Its so much better to read cookbooks along with recording here at cookbooker - I really agree. So much less leafing through cookbooks trying to find that faintly remembered recipe...

I don't really want so much email - I get enough already - but I'm with redjanet at not wanting to miss things. What if there were a weekly email to update you on all those things?

Favorite Summer Time Meals
When I think about summer cooking, the first thing that comes to mind is what I don't like - and that is a hot kitchen - so no cooking pasta! I do love salads, and I could live on tomatoes. What I've not done much of is cold soups. Bu…

How do you store and organise your herbs and spices?
Years ago, my sister-in-law gave me a large can of Watkins cinnamon. I have only about 1 tsp left, and still, it smells so much better than my new container of Saigon Cinnamon (from Costco). The aroma difference is so striking that I'll be or…

How do you store and organise your herbs and spices?
The cilantro and parsley are annuals - I've tried growing them but for me they didn't last long. The chives and thyme are perennial, so with luck they will come back every year. I have dried basil when I've had a surplus, and years…

How do you store and organise your herbs and spices?
Since this conversation, I've replaced all my dried herbs, my list includes dates, and I've put perennial herbs in my raised bed garden. So probably half the year, I'll now be in good shape. Any of you experienced with drying your o…
