All Cakes Considered
I've made 4 cakes from this book so far, and all have been raved about (well, we haven't tried #4 yet, but it looks good!). The book is designed for you to work your way through it, learning new skills as you go. The first recipe is for a basic pound cake, and she walks you through it step by step. Experienced bakers would probably find this to be overkill, but for new cake bakers such as myself, it was very valuable, and I now feel like I know the tricks to making a cake turn out right every time.

If you've never made a cake from fear, laziness, or just never thought of it before... this book will change your cake-life. Cake is now to me the celebratory victory of the chemistry of baking AND something wonderful to share, though not only on special occasions.
Gray covers every type of cake imaginable (and some I'd never considered before). The photography is phenomenal and the design of the book is just hip enough to make something your grandma would have made into the modern girl's go-to cake for any occasion.
I may be a hipster at heart, and this book will certainly find itself on many a hipster shelf, but truly- this is a cake resource for anyone interested in beefing up their baking skills. The basics are laid out wonderfully for those of us who aren't Martha/Paula/Betty Crocker, but the recipes are challenging enough that someone who is a cake-master will find something new to add to their repertoire.
Ok, I'll shut up now, but for real- amazing. Two frosting covered thumbs-up.
