Although I enjoyed the flavour of this cake, it is not particularly outstanding. The root beer provides a fairly mild differentiation from a classic chocolate cake, a subtle flavour that sort of lingers in the background. The intensity of the root beer flavour I am sure is based upon the brand of root beer used - I used a standard popular brand, not one with natural flavourings, so I imagine this affected the outcome of the cake. However, the cake turned out moist and has a wonderful texture, and while I would not say it was the best chocolate cake that has ever graced my kitchen or my lips, it was still satisfying.
The root beer (Faygo based on a recent rave review from a popular cooking magazine) made the cake medicinal tasting. Too bad, because I really love the taste of root beer. I followed the recipe to a "t" but ended up throwing the cake away after serving everyone a piece at the birthday party. Ice cream made it slightly better, but I will skip the hassle and just have a root beer float next time instead.
