I believe that cookbooks are infested with dubious recipes, but they get away with it. Sometimes the recipe just needs tweaking, other times it's complete rubbish.
You can often tell on first reading that a recipe is defective. In this instance my alarm bell would have rung at the stated cooking temperature.

You're probably right, but often, I'm drawn specifically to recipes that are unusual in some way - I want to be surprised, find out something new, learn something I previously thought wasn't possible or couldn't imagine. Obviously, there will be sacrifices on that path... Also, I must admit that I don't study recipes well enough before deciding that I will give them a try.
And yes, magazines get away with it, no wonder as every edition will disappear from the market after a month or so.

I usually follow a recipe faithfully the first time. Then if I like it enough to try it again I might make modifications. Make something often enough and it's become a whole new recipe!
That's the basis of a lot of cookbooks anyway. Just variations on existing recipes, and I'm not at all sure how thoroughly they are tested in many cases.
I think there can be problems too with books by chefs adapting recipes to small quantities made with domestic equipment.
