The 'spices' are curry powder, which as Slater says people turn their noses up at nowadays. He specifies using powder from 'a recently-opened tin', though. Me, I buy mine in little resealable packets from Herbies.

Whatever, and adding that I sustitute chopped tinned tomatoes for the 4 fresh ones in the recipe, it works. Of course it's not a curry, it's not supposed to be.
