This is the first time I've ever made homemade baked beans.
I doubled the recipe because I'm bringing it to a large gathering. I followed the directions and cooked the onions and garlic on the stove and started the sauce there as well. I then added the sauce to the beans in a crockpot.
I cooked the beans in the crockpot on low for 6 hours before turning it down to warm. All the flavors came together perfectly - they're not too sweet nor do they taste of molasses. They're just right.
This rec...

Beth, I'm so glad your crockpot experiment worked! I must have used a super dark molasses because the flavour was really prevalent when I made this dish. I must try them again with a lighter molasses.

My husband and I really enjoyed these beans. Unfortunately, because I didn't have the required light molasses, I had to use a very strongly flavoured dark molasses and my daughter couldn't get past the overpowering smell and flavour. I cut the amount in half and added some agave nectar to replace it but it did not mask the strong smell. I will definitely have to re-stock my pantry because these simple baked beans were very satisfying and we enjoyed them paired with fluffy steamed rice and ve... Read more

With all the talk about this recipe I was going to make it, but I only have dark molasses. I was wondering about subbing it in anyway so thanks for the heads up on that. Looks like I will have to go in search of a light one. Do you think a different liquid sweetener would work. I've never tasted light molasses before so I'm not sire about the flavour.

Jayme - you don't actually need anything called "light" molasses. You just want something that doesn't say dark or blackstrap. Regular molasses is just fine.

I know I used dark molasses in mine, and I liked the flavor. One way to cut the molasses flavor while keeping the sweetness might be to use part molasses and part dark corn syrup. That wouldn't affect the liquid levels. Its sure fun to see all this conversation about this recipe!

We had leftover beans with steak for dinner tonight. They warmed up nicely in the microwave.

Jayme, I may be in the minority with the molasses problem. I liked the recipe and so did my husband but my daughter found the molasses flavour really too strong. So maybe it's not an issue for an adult palate. You could always try half maple syrup or agave nectar and half molasses if you're worried. :-)

I love leftover beans in sauce. I had some tonight too from a different recipe and threw them into my veggie stir fry at the last minute. It was good!

Oh, I didn't catch that it was only your daughter who didn't like it the first time I read that! I love molasses so I should really just go ahead and make this. And it's good to know that it's just saying no blackstrap molasses. I can't remember what kind of molasses I have and I'm too lazy ti check right now, but I'm going to go ahead and join the bean party in the next day or two. These sound so yummy!

Go for it! Join the bean party!

You all have me hungry for these, I'll have to make them again. My kids actually fought over who would get to eat these as leftovers. Amazing!

This was such a good baked bean flavor - amazing! I selected this recipe because I had frozen cooked white beans in my freezer. I used a Vidalia onion instead of regular yellow, a bit of extra garlic, but otherwise followed the instructions.
This recipe reminded me of my mother's baked bean pot, and that I had not seen a baked bean pot in many years. I used a pyrex casserole pan with a lid. Mine was a bit runny after 45 minutes, so the last 15 minutes cooked with the lid off. Everyone enjoy...

Great photo! The beans look so good I'm going to try that recipe myself.

These are delicious, Leeka. My kids loved them too, and were disappointed when they were gone.

QS, I have a super picky 5 year old and I really need her to eat more (vegetable protein) beans. Thanks for the feedback about your kids, that's just the kind of information I need to bump up a recipe to the top of my list!

I wonder if I could make these in my crock pot for the 4th of July. It's going to be so hot I hate to turn on the oven. Any thoughts?
Leeka · 14 years ago
Beth, I don't see why not. I don't have a crockpot but this seems like the perfect recipe to go in one. You might just have to do the first part on the stovetop (onion sauté etc.) and then throw it all in the slow-cooker for the baking part though. I would go for it!

I think I'm going to give it a try. I'm thinking I may need to take the cover off for a bit to let some moisture out but otherwise it seems like it would be a better way of making baked beans in the summer.

Crockpot seems like a good choice to me. I'll be interested to see if its kid appeal is widespread.
BethNH · 14 years ago
My kids won't eat them - they don't eat beans. I think they'll be great in the crockpot for the 4th of July party because they'll stay hot.
Leeka · 14 years ago
If you like them saucy, you could probably leave the lid on.
BethNH · 14 years ago
Well, I got up early before work today. I sauteed the onions and garlic and started the sauce on the stove. Then I added all that to the beans in the crockpot and set it on low. I'll let you know how it turns out later. Also, I doubled the recipe because I'm taking it to a large party. Edit: They came out great! Nice and saucy but not too liquedy. Delicious! This is a perfect crockpot recipe.
